The Revolution of the Connected Consumer

A lot of my energy as a Social Media consultant is spent explaining to you how to use tools like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others effectively. Many of you have realized that a presence on these platforms is important for your business. While I get a lot of satisfaction out of teaching you how to use the tools I hope you understand that we are talking about more than just a new “nice to have” in your marketing toolbox.

The goal of this post is to motivate you to watch this 11minute video of a TEDx Presidio talk by Brian Solis. I know that my saying it is important to watch is not going to be enough, so I’ll transcribe a few key quotes below the video.

What stuck out for you – care to discuss?

(all quotes are by Brian Solis unless otherwise indicated)

“Relationships – the way in which two or more people or organizations regard and behave toward each other”

Brian Solis Quote social economy

The Occupy movement was less about a cause but more about what happens when people get together to say something.
No matter if it’s the occupy movement or a revolution in the Middle East – the point is that you and I have a voice.

You and I have the ability to get together and do something to change something. As long as it is important to you and me.

“Whether you are the 99% or the 1%, fact is you are part of a movement”

Business leaders shouldn’t have to experience a consumer revolution …. if employees care enough, the “Corporate Spring” will happen from within.

The Social Economy has given rise to a new consumer revolution. In an era of connected consumerism, Social Media Strategies aren’t going to save your business.

People are running these relationships with editorial calendars on Facebook because they think that your “Like” of them was a form of opt-in

Social Capital can be measured by the amount of trust and reciprocity in a community or between individuals ~Robert Putnam

[Social capital is the ….] investment in social relations with expected returns in the marketplace ~Nan Lin

Sometimes capitalism isn’t just measured by profit, but by the richness of relationships and earned social capital

The future is yours to shape. Both as an individual and as a member of the organisation you might work with.
But it takes a lot of things…

It takes empathy
It takes courage
It takes vision
It takes perseverance
Resistance will always fall to persistence”

I hope you watch the video and discuss your impressions with us

Become Your Own Broadcaster – Promote Your Events With The Right Social Media Tools

How we reached an audience of 76,000 for the Kelowna Apple Triathlon without the help of traditional media

[tabs style=”boxed”] [tab title=”Post”] Social Media tools present huge opportunities for event organizers to promote events and keep spectators informed.

The event itself is mostly only the highlight of a campaign and/or the ongoing work of an organization. The benefits of having your event highly publicised are many. Exposure, fundraising and membership drives are probably the most obvious. Events are also great ways to build your Social Media following for your future work. Beyond Marketing: @ExploreEnderby – The Twitter Project in The North Okanagan

I’m always looking for good, innovative ways to use Social Media tools and today I would like to introduce you to an awesome project using Twitter. We found this great project in the little town of Enderby BC – population of 2900. We traveled to Enderby to talk to some of the people involved. Social Media Retail Clients Expect More

Last week I told you about this Survey Kyle Parrotta conducted for a research paper he is working on.

He shared his results with me and we discovered an interesting trend. It’s not really surprising that more and more retail customers use Social Media tools like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. What surprises me is the fact that more people expect product information on Social Media than contests.

Are you giving your Customers enough information?

Facebook Pages Are The Only Way To Promote Your Business Or Organization!

Last week the Newsmedia was buzzing with the news that 83 Million Facebook accounts are “fake”. If you take out a couple of million accounts created for the purpose of “selling likes” the vast majority are probably so called “miscategorized” accounts. Meaning Facebook profiles used to promote a business or organization.

Yesterday I saw a post on Hoax-Slayer de-bunking the myth that animal rights groups are targeted by Facebook. They are not, but you are not supposed to use Profiles to promote your cause either. It’s not only against Facebook’s TOS but you also miss out on a whole lot of benefits Facebook Pages give us!

Using Facebook Profiles for anything other than a real person has been against Facebook’s Terms of Service since Pages were introduced but nobody seemed to do much about it. I suspect that Facebook will find a way to shut down these profiles quickly now because the “fake” accounts are damaging to Facebook’s bottom line and therefore it’s stock prices.

There are more reasons why it makes sense to switch to Facebook Pages as soon as possible:

Beware of Traps on Facebook

They seem to come in waves – but a lot of them return over and over again: Facebook scams. The other day I asked on my Facebook Page:

What do you do if you see one of your Facebook friends post a scam on their wall?

Most of you responded that you would tell your friend, either on their wall or in a private message, that they fell into a trap. Continue reading “Beware of Traps on Facebook”

What Metric Is Important To Measure Your Social Media Success?

Social Media is not “free”. Considerable time, creative energy and knowledge goes into a successful Social Media presence. While every hour spent on your Social Media presence adds value to your business it is also important to know if your efforts are working.

You will hear me speak very little about strategy – because there are so many Social Media Experts that overuse the term. However, regardless of if you are using a blog for your business, Facebook for your club, Twitter for fun or Pinterest for your wedding planning, looking at the statistics of what messages worked and what didn’t is important and interesting.

If it’s not measurable, it’s miserable ~Hans Looman Continue reading “What Metric Is Important To Measure Your Social Media Success?”

Your Top 10 Uses for Twitter

Social Media is a revolution in the way we communicate and the current Social Media Platforms like Facebook, Pinterest …. and Twitter are just that: Tools

Twitter is my favourite Platform right now. What appeals to me is the real-time conversation, the openness and the limitation to 140 characters. I use Twitter for many things and I like it best for connecting with individuals that I wouldn’t have met otherwise.

But Twitter is just a tool with about 500 Million accounts  (my guess is that about 1/3 are unused)

I have discovered incredible people on Twitter and I even credit Twitter for finding the love of my life. But enough about me.

I recently asked “How do you use Twitter” on my Facebook Page and ended up with great answers. I’m putting in the answers in the listly below but let’s make this post dynamic:

Please vote on your favourite uses and feel free to add more to the list.

Avoid Most Auto-DMs on Twitter

The more people you follow on Twitter, the more you will find your Direct Message (DM) box filling up. If you have set your notifications to send you emails, like I suggested in this little video: “How to set your Twitter Notifications,” your email box will fill up as well. Many of my friends will not even look at their DMs anymore unless you let them know that you sent them something in private. But there is a magic bullet to get rid of auto-DMs. Continue reading “Avoid Most Auto-DMs on Twitter”
